At Skillion, we’ve spent years developing technologies for eBikes that serve real riders in the real world. And now, with the launch of our Android-based KSS App, we’re offering a whole new way for eBike users to interact with their bikes, stay connected, and enhance their overall riding experience. As the CEO of Skillion, I’m proud to share the story behind the app and what makes it truly different.
The Problem with Typical Bike Apps
Most biking apps today fall into two broad categories:
- GPS-based tracking apps (like Strava, Endomondo, Cyclemeter)
- Fitness-focused trackers (like Garmin, Wahoo)
While these apps offer useful features, they also have significant limitations. They’re often difficult to operate while riding, not connected directly to the bike, and frequently inaccurate. Most importantly, they rely on the rider’s smartphone in ways that can be unsafe or impractical, especially when the phone is tucked away.
Riders often find themselves “digitally disconnected”—unable to access critical ride data or control functions safely. We set out to solve this.
Designed with the Rider in Mind
The KSS App was designed to bring cockpit-grade integration and simplicity to the handlebar. Drawing inspiration from airline and automotive design, we implemented multiple user-friendly innovations:
1. Multi-Mode Interface
We introduced a “mode” system that allows riders to quickly switch between functions—like navigation, performance tracking, and communication—using a single button. This approach, inspired by aircraft cockpits, ensures maximum situational awareness.
2. Thumb Controller + IF Module
To keep handlebars clean and uncluttered, we created the IF module and Thumb Controller. Mounted near the grip and connected via Bluetooth, this compact control lets riders change modes without looking down, maintaining a heads-up posture.
3. Built-in Features That Matter
We integrated unique features unavailable in most cycling apps:
- Find-a-Bike: Locate fellow KSS App riders nearby.
- Flash Messaging: Send preset messages like “wait there” or “slow down” with a tap.
- Tours: Share and follow scenic or guided routes with additional media.
- Hawkeye Integration: Our rear AI-powered camera system that detects threats approaching from behind.
- Sentry Mode: Lock the bike electronically and receive alerts, view live video, or remotely shut down the motor in case of disturbance.
4. Audio Feedback (Coming Soon)
To further reduce distractions, we plan to implement voice feedback for mode switching and alerts.
Real-World Development
We didn’t just design this app in a lab. Every feature has been through field testing, often multiple times. A great example is our Moving Map feature. The initial version routed riders using car-friendly paths via Google’s API. We redesigned the system to prioritize bike trails—making every ride safer and more enjoyable.
The KSS App is now available for free on the Google Play Store, and it works even on low-cost Android devices. Many users dedicate a separate phone for their bike setup, protecting their primary phone while still enjoying full functionality.
Final Thoughts
We’ve always believed the best tech doesn’t get in the way—it enhances the experience. The KSS App is our commitment to giving riders the tools they need without distractions. Whether you’re commuting, exploring, or training, this app was built to be your digital co-pilot.
